Work-Based Learning

Work-based learning (WBL) in a high school setting refers to educational experiences that connect classroom learning with real-world work environments. These programs allow students to apply academic knowledge and technical skills in hands-on, practical settings such as internships, job shadowing, apprenticeships, and cooperative education. The goal is to help students gain professional skills, understand workplace expectations, and explore career pathways, while also reinforcing what they are learning in school. Work-based learning fosters career readiness by providing exposure to industries and developing essential competencies like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. See the chart below for the different types of work-based learning (WBL) activities to support student learning.
