Dear Senior Parents,

This letter is to inform you of the Kennett High School Final Exam Schedule. Final exams are mandatory. The mid-term exam is worth 10% (ten percent) of your son or daughter’s final grade, and the final exam is worth 10% of your son or daughter’s final grade for a total of 20% (twenty percent) for the year in each subject. If he/she is not present for the final exam, he/she will not receive credit for the class. For this reason, it is very important that if your child is unexpectedly ill and unable to attend school, you must call the school so that his/her grade is not jeopardized and arrangements can be made for a time to make-up these exams.

Students are not required to be in school during a regularly-scheduled study hall or lunch period. Students who do not have a scheduled exam, but are using district transportation, must report to the cafeteria for that non-exam period.

On May 31^st, seniors with an exam will report to advisory for attendance. The exam will begin at 7:54am in the auxiliary gym and conclude at 9:24am. Seniors who are not testing can report to school at 9:20am and must check into the main office for attendance. Any student electing to arrive at 9:20am on May 31^st must provide their own transportation to school. All buses will make regular morning runs. The start of half days for seniors begins on June 1^st; no bussing will be available to transport seniors after exams.

The 3^rd Annual Senior Stroll is scheduled for May 31^st following the first period exam. More information will be forthcoming on this event.

If there is a two-hour delay because of inclement weather, we will follow our two-hour delay schedule for classes for that day with the school day ending at the regular time – 2:35pm. The examinations scheduled for that day would then be given on the following day. If school is cancelled for the entire day, examinations will be given the following day.

The last day of attendance at Technical College High School (TCHS) for senior students is Wednesday, May 30^th. TCHS senior students will report to Kennett High School to take exams on May 31^st, June 1^st, June 4^th, June 5^th and June 6^th as indicated on the attached schedule. In addition, TCHS seniors must report to TCHS on Tuesday, May 29^th for graduation rehearsal. Seniors will take a bus from TCHS to Oxford High School for rehearsal as students are not permitted to drive on their own. The graduation ceremony will begin a 7pm on Thursday, May 31st at Oxford High School.

Please be advised on June 11^th, which is a full-day with a modified bell schedule, students who do not have a regularly scheduled 8^th period are permitted to arrive to school for advisory period which begins at 9:14am. Students electing to arrive at 9:14am on June 11^th must provide their own transportation to school. All buses will make regular morning runs. During the half days, the return home bus will begin at 11:05am. Half-days for underclassmen will begin on Thursday, June 12^th.

Juniors are reminded that Graduation Project Presentations have been scheduled for June 12^th and June 13^th at 11am, 11:15am, 11:30am and 11:45am. Confirm presentation date and time with the Graduation Project Advisor.

In April, Kennett High School welcomed high school students, teachers, and school personnel to the 17^th Annual Multicultural and Diversity Awareness Conference. The day was full of thought-provoking workshops organized by a student committee and led by students, educators, and adults who are all well versed in multicultural affairs. The event was kicked off by Mr. Ray Fernandez, the program coordinator and the assistant principal of Kennett High School.

Mr. Fernandez opened the gathering by sharing that the conference is the highlight of the school year for him. “Every year,” he announced, “I look forward to this special event because it’s an awesome opportunity for all of us to not only learn, but to participate and receive a positive and rewarding experience.”

He continued by encouraging the students attending to become involved in the discussions throughout the day. “We want you to be an active participant, not a passive listener,” he said. “Listen, but also speak and ask questions, as well. Offer your thoughts and opinions.”

Following the thoughtful words of Mr. Fernandez, the superintendent of Kennett Consolidated School District, Dr. Barry Tomasetti, took the opportunity to say a few words and to applaud Mr. Fernandez’ hard work in making the Multicultural and Diversity Conference a highly anticipated event hosted by the District for 17 years.

Next to the podium was Kennett High School freshman Johnette Boddy who eloquently introduced the influential keynote speaker, Mr. John Suggs, community activist and executive director of CF Charities in Philadelphia.

The day included two workshop sessions, a wonderful lunch buffet filled with options that reflected the diverse backgrounds of the students, and a presentation by Emmy Award–winning HBO Associate Producer and Editor Mr. Courtland Bragg. Following the afternoon workshops, the day concluded with a student talent show.

Keyanna has volunteered at the conference since her freshman year. She is a member of both UNIDAD and Ujima, student groups focusing on Latino and African-American student leadership.

“I enjoy the Multicultural Conference because it enables me to step out of my comfort zone,” Keyanna says. “I get to meet new people and share ideas.”

Mrs. Tania Ramos Oton, a teacher from Esperanza Academy in Philadelphia, has been bringing students to the Multicultural and Diversity Awareness Conference for years. She comments that she welcomes the opportunity to expose her students from North Philadelphia to a youth conference about diversity. Two of her students, sophomore Wily Lopez and freshman Andrick Medrano, were looking forward to their workshop choices, stating that both held the potential to help them in their daily lives.

Students from 16 different schools attended the conference. All took away a heightened appreciation for their diverse cultural backgrounds. Mr. Fernandez explains that, “We are all unique, but we share the same dreams, struggles, and fears. It is this joining together and the safe space we provide at this conference that helps students realize that although we may be slightly different on the outside, we are all the same on the inside.”

KHS Artists Exhibit Work

Kennett High School artists displayed their talents for their fellow students, teachers, staff, and parents. The annual art show was held in the school’s auxiliary gym on May 3.

The show included works from all visual arts classes within the Fine Arts Department. Teachers Ms. Jodi Davidson, Mr. Tom Hironimus, and Mrs. Kathy Caputo Nelms guided their students through the creation and exhibition of their artwork; all three teachers are undeniably impressed by their students.

Mrs. Caputo Nelms said, “The KHS Art Exhibit showcased the creativity of our student artists with a wide range of work. On display this year were drawings, paintings, ceramics, digital photographs, and graphic designs. The art students worked very hard all year toward this culminating event where their creations were displayed for the entire Kennett High School community.”

“Kennett High School art students are extremely hard working and incredibly talented. They are dedicated to getting better every day and being the best they can be. It is a blessing to be surrounded by such enthusiastic and committed students,” added Mr. Hironimus.

“The Kennett High School students in our ceramics classroom constantly amaze me with their dedication, creativity, and willingness to explore new techniques and challenge themselves daily. I love working with the kids here at Kennett High School, and each day is a new opportunity for everyone to continue to learn and grow as a student of life,” said Ms. Davidson. Her students demonstrated their skills throughout the day, as they took turns throwing pieces on a pottery wheel.

Charlie Lewis, former Kennett Middle School teacher who creates etchings, also displayed his work. And, Mini-THON and the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) used the opportunity to disseminate information and raise funds for their organizations. Mrs. Susan Larson’s students served fresh baked cookies to attendees who also enjoyed cupcakes made by Mrs. Rachel Moreira’s classes, while Mr. Chu’s Introduction to Engineering Design students displayed some of their automata, creative toys with moving parts. By all accounts, the show was a success!

Congratulations Alex Cresci

On Monday the April 23rd, Kennett High School junior – Alex Cresci – was awarded “Best of Show” for her artwork at the 44^th annual Chester County Art Association Chester County High School Art Show. Alex’s piece was selected “Best in Show” from more than 450 projects of all mediums from each school in Chester County.
