2020 Senior Textbook & Materials Return – 6/2/2020 and 6/3/2020

Tuesday and Wednesday, June 2nd and 3rd are the days the seniors will return their textbooks and/or library books, pay any fees or obligations, and return any technology (laptops, hot spots, etc.) that were borrowed from the school district since school moved to the virtual setting. We are using a similar process as that of cap and gown distribution. Please note that any students who still need to pick up their caps and gowns may now do so on these days instead of the original make-up day of June 1st.

Seniors, please also make note that the Front-Steps Farewell event in which you can walk down the front steps of Kennett High School is your graduation attire for a photo is tentatively scheduled for June 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th. The specific plan and details of this will be sent to you by the middle of next week.

When coming to the high school, please enter from the South Street entrance, pass through the lower parking lot and come through the stations in the front of the school. This will again be a drop off opportunity; therefore, you will not need to get out of your car. Please wear a face mask while checking in and handing over materials. If you need to send someone else with your materials, please email Dr. Hritz at jhritz@kcsd.org to let us know to expect someone else with your drop off.

The schedule is by senior advisory rooms. Both the schedule and parking lot entry plan are included below.

  • There will be several stations at the high school that will be organized for your convenience.
  • The first station will be a check-in where you will provide your name and what you are returning.
  • The second station will be for you to pay any fees or obligations that you may have. *If possible, please bring a check or money order payable to “KCSD” for ease of handling. If cash is necessary, please make sure that you bring exact change.
  • The next station is for you to return any library books or materials you may still have.
  • The next area you will be returning all your textbooks to a school employee. Please bring ALL books with you.
  • The final station you will be able to return all of your technology devices that were borrowed.

Devolución de materiales y libros de texto para los seniors de 2020

Weekly Update: Friday, May 29, 2020

Happy Friday to all of our students who are moving closer to the end of the school year, and congratulations to our outstanding seniors who have finished up their final day of school today! It’s hard to believe we have been in this online setting for nearly 3 months, and now, our year together is coming to an end. I again want to reiterate how proud I am of our students for their resilience and perseverance with their learning during this challenging time. You have all worked very hard, and the approaching summer break will definitely be well-deserved by all of you. As we close out Friday, I wanted to share a few notes:

  • There will be no school on Tuesday, June 2nd. Please mark your calendars.
  • The final day of school for all underclassmen is next Friday, June 5th. Please communicate with your teachers to find out if you have any missing work.
  • The Front-Steps Farewell Event for the senior class, which will allow for students to walk down the front steps of KHS in caps and gowns for a photo opportunity, is tentatively scheduled for June 10th through the 13th. The specific plan and schedule for this event will be sent out by the middle of next week.

  • A plan for underclassmen to return textbooks and to retrieve items is being developed and should be disseminated by the middle of June.
  • Report cards for the 4th marking period will be mailed home by June 19th. However, final grades will be available in Skyward for you to review by June 9th.

I again want to thank all students and families for their commitment to learning during the school closure. I will provide a final update for the school year next week as we conclude our final day of school.

Kennett High School Seniors Recognition Events 2020

Good Evening,

I hope everybody has had a productive start to their week! Today marks the start of week 10 of online learning, and we are moving closer to our senior class finishing their requirements for earning a Kennett High School diploma.

A few weeks ago, I shared our plan with all of you regarding our graduation ceremony, and the different options in place should we not be able to adhere to our originally scheduled date. At this time, due to the extension of Governor Wolf’s stay at home order, the graduation date of June 5th has been rescheduled for our postponement date of Saturday, July 25th at 10:00 AM. Please mark your calendars for this new date for graduation.

In addition to our in-person graduation ceremony on July 25th, we have also developed a variety of other activities to honor, recognize, and celebrate our outstanding senior class. The activities we have planned were directed by the feedback from the senior class, in addition to adhering to governmental regulations. While the current crisis has forced us to rethink how we celebrate our graduates, we believe we have a plan that allows us to do so within the parameters provided by the state.

Accompanying this communication is the series of events we have in place to honor the class of 2020! We encourage all of our seniors and their families to participate in these activities to celebrate the accomplishments of our amazing students!

We have also put together a printable poster highlighting these special events for you to put on display in your homes.

Also, please note the last day of school for senior students is Friday, May 29th.

Kennett High School Awards Night

Thursday, May 21st @ 7:00 PM

Students will be recognized for their accomplishments throughout the year through a virtual production of our traditional awards ceremony. A link to the ceremony will be posted on the district website on May 21st at 7:00 PM for you to view, in addition to being sent out via email.

KHS Senior Comeback

Tuesday, May 26th and Wednesday, May 27th – 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Drive up to Kennett High School and pick up your cap, gown, diploma holder, and yearbook! Students will be assigned a pick-up time in which they will drive up to the front steps, provide their name to one of the KHS staff members, and then the cap, gown, diploma holder, and yearbook will be given to you through the window of your vehicle. No students are permitted to exit their vehicles during the pick-up and may arrive only at the assigned time provided by administration. The specific directions for this event, along with the schedule, will be communicated by the end of this week.

The Final KHS Senior Roundtable

Thursday, May 28th – 6:00 – 7:30 PM

Join Dr. Hritz, and special KHS guests, as they conduct the final senior student roundtable! They will be joined by senior students throughout the evening to share memories and reminisce on the educational journey of the class of 2020. The final roundtable will be packaged into a video that will then be made available to all seniors.

KHS Twitter Senior Night

Friday, May 29th – 6:00 – 9:00 PM

Record your video/compose your written goodbye message to your classmates and KHS/KCSD Staff, and tweet it to the @KCSDKennettHS Twitter page and tag it #KHSGoodbye. We will review the video/message for appropriateness and then retweet for your classmates to view. You can then spend the evening watching and listening to the goodbyes of your peers! Start working on your message today!

Then and Now Senior Celebration

Tuesday, June 2nd

Coordinated by the KHS School Counselors

Look how we’ve grown! During the week of June 1st, seniors will post “then and now” pictures of themselves (a picture from childhood and a current picture – maybe one in their cap and gown!) with a brief description of their plans for next year, whether it be college, the workforce, military, or something else equally awesome! Faculty and staff will also be encouraged to participate. In a video presentation, Dr. Hritz will announce the scholarship winners of the senior class as selected by the Scholarship Committee. The video will be available via district website and will also be sent out through email.

One of the highlights of every senior class who graduate from KHS is their creation of their own senior video. Watch different skits, sharing of memories, and staff goodbyes to the class of 2020 in the traditional KHS Senior Video! The video will be made available via a link on the district website at 7:00 PM on June 5th. Enjoy this senior production with your families and celebrate! We are also encouraging all seniors and their families to go outside at 7:00 PM this evening and cheer, chant, scream, and/or make whatever type of noise you’d like in honor of the KHS Class of 2020! Let the entire Kennett community hear our unified cheers! Additionally, from 7:00 – 7:20 PM, we will turn on the high school stadium lights for 20 minutes in honor of the class of 2020! Please note that the stadium and school properties are off limits during the lighting of the stadium. Please responsibly celebrate at your home or at another safe space while abiding by social distancing.

Friday, Dates/Times to Be Announced

Clad in cap and gown, graduating seniors will walk down the front steps of Kennett High School and pose for a picture on the step landing. All seniors will be assigned a specific date and time when they will have to be on site to participate. Each student’s parents/guardians may pose for a picture with them on the step landing. A professional photographer will be on hand to take photos, and the photos will be provided to students at no charge. All guidelines for social distancing must be followed in order to participate in this event. The schedule and the specific guidelines for this event will be communicated the week of May 26th. We anticipate this to take place when we move to Code Yellow. Senior sports recognition will be included in this event as well.

Buenas noches,

¡Espero que todos hayan pasado un principio de semana productivo! Hoy marca el comienzo de la semana 10 del aprendizaje en línea, y nos estamos acercando al final de los requisitos para obtener un diploma de Kennett High School por nuestra clase de grado 12 (los seniors).

Hace unas semanas, compartí nuestro plan con todos ustedes con respecto a nuestra ceremonia de graduación, y las diferentes opciones que existían en caso de que no pudiéramos cumplir con nuestra fecha programada originalmente. Kennett High School senior Rónán Gorman, like so many of America’s students, was looking for something to do. His pre-pandemic days were incredibly full; between a demanding academic course load, the Demon Robotics team, swimming, and track and field, he had very little free time. But with all of his club meetings and competitions cancelled, he found himself especially missing the Robotics shop and the hands-on work he did there.

Soon after stay-at-home orders were issued in Pennsylvania, Rónán heard about the dire need for personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers nationwide. Using his Computer-Aided Design (CAD) abilities, he decided to 3D print “ear savers” that he first saw on Facebook.

“The ear saver is just one solid piece, so I knew it would be easier for me to print and distribute quickly to as many people as possible,” Rónán observed.

Rónán’s ear-saving device attaches to a facemask and eases the discomfort of wearing that critical piece of PPE for extremely long hours, day after day by achieving a tighter fit even on smaller heads and relieving the pressure of the mask’s weight on the wearer’s ears. Once he determined his production strategy, Rónán then planned to donate his ear savers to medical personnel, first responders, and other essential workers serving the Kennett community. Gauging interest by reaching out to family friends who are nurses or doctors, he soon had several requests for the device. Word traveled quickly via social media after he delivered his first batch, and in a matter of two or three days, Rónán was printing ear savers nearly around the clock on his one 3D printer.

Each ear saver takes approximately 20 minutes and about 5 grams of filament to print. As weeks passed and demand increased, Rónán reached out to two friends on the Robotics team, Nate Judd and Rio King, who also have 3D printers. Together, they have been able to produce enough to help meet the community’s needs.

Rónán accepts no payment for his ear savers, taking on the cost of the filament necessary to print the equipment himself. Instead, he asks recipients to “pay it forward.”

“I’d like people to make a donation to the KACS Food Cupboard or some other organization in the community,” Rónán said, “but I also ask people to just pass the word. The goal is to keep the people who are putting their own lives at risk safe right now.”

Christina Gorman, Rónán’s mother, believes that the person Rónán has become is “a direct reflection of the influence, experiences, and education from his 13 years as a student at KCSD.”

“The combination of Rónán’s involvement with the Robotics Team and STEM courses, along with Kennett’s high standards and requirements for community service, developed his natural interest in looking at today’s challenges, identifying a problem or need, then using creativity and technology to come up with a solution. He put that into action by donating his time and resources to help others,” she added.

At some point along the way, Rónán lost count of the number of ear savers he was producing. But, he can confidently say that several hundred have been printed and donated to Chester County Hospital, Lankenau Hospital, Christiana Hospital, the Covid ICU at Riddle Memorial Hospital, A.I. DuPont Nemours, doctor’s offices, veterans’ homes, the KACS Food Cupboard, the local farming industry for hands-on staff, and many other organizations and facilities.

This fall Rónán will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology to study Mechanical Engineering Technology with an interest in renewable energies. Rónán currently holds three Kennett High School swimming records in relay events and plans to swim for RIT. He has earned top merit as well as STEM-related scholarships.

Each one of the devices that Rónán prints and donates represents a true dedication both to his principles and to his passions. In these unprecedented and often stressful times, his ingenuity and his kindness have brought comfort to many on the front lines of the fight against Covid-19 – in particular, to their ears.

I hope everyone has had an excellent week of online learning!

We are wrapping up week 9 of the school closure, and we are inching toward the end of the school year. Students, if you are counting, there are 13 instructional days remaining in our school year. Please continue to work hard and finish with a strong effort!

A few notes as we close out Friday:

  1. A reminder that the final day to make changes to your course recommendations and requests for next school year will be Friday, May 22nd.
  2. Our virtual KHS Awards Ceremony is next Thursday, May 21st at 7:00 PM. The link to the virtual awards will be posted on the website for you to view. Please stay tuned for more specific information on how to access the awards next week.
  3. Students, please make sure you continue to log in to Schoology and complete the work assigned by your teachers. Additionally, please make sure you are communicating any challenges you are experiencing to your teachers so they can assist.
  4. Finally, seniors, on Monday, we will be sharing our recognition plan for the class of 2020 that highlights the many celebrations we have been developing over the last several weeks! We are excited to unveil our plan to you!

Kennett Education Foundation Donate and Deliver

May 2020

Between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon on Wednesday, May 23rd Kennett High School teachers and administrators, as well as members of the Kennett Education Foundation (KEF) placed yard signs on the lawns of all 326 members of KHS’s 129th graduating class, the class of 2020. These volunteers drove district bus routes, planting the signs at the homes of seniors.

The signs were funded by a generous donation from the KEF. Lettered in Kennett blue and white, of course, and featuring the Kennett “K” logo, each sign proudly proclaims Kennett Education Foundation Congratulates the Class of 2020. The reverse side of the sign offers the same good wishes in Spanish.

KEF printed a total of 400 signs, with plans to place the additional 75 signs at the high school itself, all of the district elementary schools, the middle school, the Y, the Garage, and other businesses and locations around town, so residents are reminded of the important milestone reached by KHS seniors. And, the graduates can see tangible proof of the pride of the entire Kennett community in their achievement.

Ann Schlitz, KEF board member, saw pictures on social media of other schools across the country using signs to honor their graduates in this unprecedented time. When she approached her fellow board members with the idea to do something similar in Kennett, she “received the fastest unanimous approval ever!”

“Everyone jumped at the idea,” she said.Class of 2020 Sign Distribution

Senior class advisor Peggy Hughes was tasked with organizing the distribution of the signs and recruiting volunteers. “When I asked for help, the response was overwhelming. Everyone wanted to do something. Our seniors are so loved, not just by those of us at the high school but by the whole community,” said Hughes.

Kennett High School principal Dr. Jeremy Hritz added, “We are very disappointed for our seniors for the way their year has been disrupted. Honoring them with the yard signs is a way for us to let them know we are thinking about them and that we care about them. We are grateful for the KEF making this possible!”

Dr. Rudy Karkosak, former KCSD Superintendent, current KEF president, and grandfather of two KHS seniors, also extended his best wishes. “The Kennett Education Foundation is pleased to partner with Kennett High School and the school district in honoring the Class of 2020. We realize that the seniors are missing many of the activities that they would have shared as graduates, but we hope they will accept these signs as recognition of their accomplishments and a token of the community’s support,” said Karkosak.

Channel 6 ABC News was on hand Wednesday to film the event. The story aired at 4:30 and 6:30.

Scheduling Update for the 2020-2021 School Year

Greetings,

Parents/guardians and students should read this letter carefully as it contains important information related to course selection and the scheduling process for the upcoming school year.

In our efforts to create a master schedule that best meets the needs of all of our students at Kennett High School for the 2020-2021 school year, it is important that we have the most accurate information related to student course selection as possible. Making certain that students have chosen their desired elective courses is a critical part of this process. To ensure accuracy, we are asking all students to do the following:

  • Review and verify elective course selections on Skyward. You can find your requests under: Schedule –>View Available Courses for 2020-2021 in Kennett High School.
  • Identify three alternate elective courses and rank them in order of interest.
  • Elective changes may be made by emailing your school counselor.
  • All changes must be submitted by the end of the day on Friday, May 22nd. After this date, changes to elective courses will only be initiated as a result of scheduling errors, irresolvable scheduling conflicts, previous course failures, or administration recommendation.

Please be aware that the following courses will not run during the 2020-2021 School Year: Accounting II, Accounting III, AP French, AP Physics 1, STEM: CEA and Poetry. If you previously selected any of these courses, please be sure to select an additional course as a replacement.

The English, math, social studies, and science courses reflect final teacher recommendations. If you would like to request an override for a teacher-recommended course, please complete the Request to Override Teacher Recommendation Form found at https://forms.gle/9pjtedMtMR996HdT6 or on the Kennett High School website under Counseling. Requests for course overrides must also be submitted by the end of the day on Friday, May 22nd. After this date, changes to core academic courses will only be initiated as a result of scheduling errors, irresolvable scheduling conflicts, previous course failures, or administration recommendation.

KHS Graduation Announcement

Kennett Students, Families, and Community

I am writing to you to communicate our plan for graduation and other senior recognition events that will occur at the end of the school year. To begin, I want to express the disappointment and heartbreak the Kennett High School Staff, and the entire Kennett Consolidated School District feel, regarding the disruption and impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our outstanding senior class. This is not the conclusion we anticipated for our seniors, and we wish there were a way to restore our normalcy so that the school year could be finished as we expected. We love our senior class dearly, and we want only the best for them. Social distancing requirements have made it challenging to create a memorable recognition experience. However, after countless hours of research, conversations with local and national school and governmental leaders, discussions with the senior class and staff members, we believe we have created a thorough plan to bring finality to the memorable academic careers of our seniors in Kennett.

Our primary goal is to host our graduation event on Friday, June 5th at 6:00 PM as originally anticipated. However, in the event social distancing requirements are not lifted by Governor Wolf, we have developed a contingency plan.

If we are unable to host an in-person graduation on the 5th of June, we will then postpone our graduation ceremony until Saturday, July 25th at 10:00 AM. On Friday, July 24th at 8:00 AM, we will host our traditional senior breakfast and graduation rehearsal at Kennett High School, followed by our Baccalaureate ceremony at 7:00 PM. If the Saturday ceremony is disrupted by weather, we will have a rain date of Sunday, July 26th at 10:00 AM. In addition, to recognize and honor our seniors on June 5th, I will be posting a special video message on the KCSD website, and we will be releasing this year’s edition of the Senior Video. We are hoping that our seniors and their families will be able to celebrate on their own by watching the Senior Video together and reflecting on their accomplishments over the past 12 years.

Lastly, should we be unable to host graduation on the July 25th postponement date, we will then host a Virtual Graduation on Friday, July 24th at 6:00 PM which will be accessible through a link on the district website. The Virtual Graduation will include all of the speeches, announcement of scholarships, and roll call of graduates. Additionally, we are looking into a number of meaningful options to celebrate all of your accomplishments in the fall if we are not able to hold an in-person ceremony.

We appreciate your patience in waiting for us to develop our plan for graduation and senior recognition, as we wanted to ensure we considered every possible option and made the optimal decision to best celebrate our seniors while following governmental guidelines. We are hopeful that we will be able to celebrate our seniors together on the legendary front steps of Kennett High School, and we will update students and families as we get more information.
