Principal’s Message 5/28/21

Happy Friday KHS Families,

Another week in the 20/21 school year is complete, and there are now only 11 school days remaining in the year. As our time together dwindles, please continue to encourage your children to work hard in the classroom to finish the year on a positive note. If students need assistance with their grades, please have them connect with their teachers, counselors, and principals. We are all here to help!

Monday is Memorial Day, and there is no school for students. Please take advantage of this time to rest and relax, and to recharge for the remaining days ahead of us. Our students have all worked very hard and deserve time to disconnect.

When we resume school on Tuesday, June 1st, we will begin Keystone Testing until June 8th. All test takers have been notified of their responsibilities for the day and testing will begin at 7:40 AM. All students not taking the Keystone Exams will not begin their school day until 10:00 AM. Students who require district transportation and who are not testing are still to ride the bus to school and arrive here in the morning. These students will be in Study Hall until testing is complete. For students who have their own transportation, they do not need to arrive at school until 9:50 AM for the start of classes of 10:00 AM. The Keystone Exam Scheduled has been attached to this email for your reference.

Here are a few notes and reminders as we close out the week:

1. Please note the last day of school for students is Tuesday, June 15th. The final day of school for seniors is June 9th. June 15th will be a half day of school and will end at 10:55 AM.

2. Please carefully read this information regarding book and material returns for KHS:

In-Person Students

  • Students should return books and other materials to their teachers as soon as it is indicated they are no longer needed for class activities.

Virtual Students

  • Virtual students are to return their books on the 1st two Mondays in June, 6/7 and 6/14 from 2:45-3:45pm.
    • Teachers will still be in the building/their rooms during these times as these dates are Teacher Hours; therefore they can collect and record inventory.
  • Students will enter the school and return their books to their respective teachers/teacher rooms directly.

3. The Chester County Health Department is providing COVID-19 vaccines at Longwood Gardens. The Pfizer vaccine is available for children ages 12 and older. Please remember to send the dates of your child’s Pfizer vaccines to Sue Steuber at ssteuber@kcsd.org.

4. The Senior Stroll will take place this year in a unique form! On Monday, June 7th, the elementary schools and the middle school will be open for our graduating seniors to visit and to see their former teachers. Students may visit the school(s) they attended. Kennett Middle School will be open from 2:45 to 3:45 PM, Mary D. Lang will be open from 3:15 to 4:15 PM, while all of the other elementary schools will be open from 3:45 to 4:45 PM.

5. Please note that the KHS Awards Night has been moved to Thursday, June 3rd at 6:00 PM. Students and their families will be contacted individually with an invitation if they are receiving an award.

6. We are currently collecting feedback from KHS families to prepare for the 2021-2022 school year. Your feedback is important to us in ensuring that our students have the absolute best educational experience at KHS. You can access the survey by clicking HERE. We are asking this survey be completed by June 4th.

KHS Senior Events

Hello Seniors and KHS Families!

Graduation is getting closer, and several celebratory events are approaching on the calendar! This is a special time of year for our seniors, as they are enjoying their final days as a student in the Kennett Consolidated School District. There is no question that this school year has been challenging, demanding, and frustrating, but our senior class has persevered in spite of the adversity. With decreasing COVID cases and the number of individuals with COVID vaccinations increasing, we are able to offer a multitude of senior celebrations for our deserving graduates. As we get closer to these events, I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of everything to look forward to for our senior class!

Finally, please note that a letter will be sent home next week that includes the specific details and parameters for our graduation ceremony. Please be on the lookout for this information for your planning purposes.

Thank you,

Jeremy Hritz, Ed.D.

Kennett High School’s Sixth Mini-THON Set for May 21

Kennett High School’s sixth annual Mini-THON will be held on Friday, May 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the grounds of Kennett Middle School. This year’s dinosaur-themed event has one goal: “Making Cancer Extinct.”

The evening’s safe, socially-distanced festivities will consist of yard games, crafts, karaoke, lip sync, dodgeball, yoga, ultimate frisbee, and other fun activities, as well as a luminary walk designed to honor those who have lost their lives to cancer. Individual students raise money from friends and family who pledge to support their commitment. Currently, this year’s top fundraisers are seniors Gavin Maxwell and Zara Quraishi who have each received donations totalling $2,000.

The Kennett Mini-THON would not be possible without generous support from the Kennett community. The KHS Mini-THON committee is grateful to this year’s sponsors — Chatham Financial, Sinton Air Conditioning & Heating, Austin and Bednash Construction, Kennett Education Foundation, both locations of El Nayarit Mexican Food Stores, Baccellieri Family Dentistry, G & G Mushroom, Guadalajara Express, Sturtee LLC, and High Tech Auto Body — for their dedication and stewardship.

Faculty advisors for the event are Lisa Teixeira, KHS librarian and Humanitarian Club moderator, and Shawn Duffy, social studies teacher and Humanitarian Club assistant moderator. Student organizers are led by event co-chair seniors Gavin Maxwell and Emma Henderson and junior co-chair Grace Pruitt. The event’s music will be provided by students Vincent Poncet and Liam Mitchell.

“I am incredibly honored by the opportunity to work with the dedicated students, faculty, and administrators at Kennett High School as we strive together to combat pediatric cancer. Our group seeks to not only raise money for Four Diamonds but to provide the community, in and out of school, with a framework for unity, inclusiveness, and fun,” said Ms. Teixeira.

Event co-chair Gavin Maxwell commented, “It has been humbling to watch the KHS Mini-THON grow from an idea six years ago when my brother helped to lay its foundations to a tradition of generosity in our community. I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to see the sincere willingness of others to contribute to a great cause.”

Co-chair Grace Pruitt added, “To see high schoolers come together for a cause such as Mini-THON is extremely heartwarming. It serves as a great reminder that we are more than capable of the things we put our mind to.”

Through a variety of activities, Kennett students have already raised more than $17,000 toward this year’s total. Offering incentives seems to have been particularly effective in encouraging fundraising. Teachers Mr. Chris Gramlich, Mr. D.J. Augustine, and Mr. Ryan Battin took a pie in the face when students reached $3,000 in donations, and Principal Dr. Jeremy Hritz and Assistant Principal Mr. Duane Kotz were duct taped to the cafeteria wall during all lunch shifts when donations hit the $5,000 mark.

One in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before their twentieth birthday, a truly alarming statistic. Four Diamonds established Mini-THON as a way for high school students to join the fight against pediatric cancer. Based on Penn State University’s THON, Mini-THON has over 90,000 student volunteers in over 265 schools. Kennett High School has been a proud Mini-THON participating school for the past five years, raising nearly $200,000 and hoping to add to that impressive total with this year’s proceeds.

If you would like to make a donation, please visit the KHS Mini-THON page at https://fourdiamonds.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=3113, search “Kennett High School donor drive,” or call the school at 610-444-6617 for more information.

Principal’s Message -5/7/21

Happy Friday KHS Families,

The first week of May has concluded, and we are only 25 school days away from the end of the year. Our students continue to work hard, both in-person and virtually, in pursuit of their academic goals. Additionally, excitement is growing as we get closer to the beginning of our spring event season, with festivities such as Mini-THON, Prom, and the Senior Dinner dance on the horizon.

We are looking forward to a fun and enjoyable finish to the school year!

Here are a few reminders as we close out the week:

1. Our final PTSO Meeting of the school is Wednesday, May 12th at 6:00 PM. In this meeting, we will provide a preview of next school year and provide a feedback survey for families. The link for PTSO will be published the morning of the meeting.

2. There is no school for students on Tuesday, May 18th and Monday, May 31st.

3. Please note the last day of school for students is Tuesday, June 15th.

4. An update on the course scheduling process will be sent home next week. Please be sure to carefully review this information.

Coats and ties are required for guys; tuxedos are welcome but optional. Suitable party outfits for women include cocktail dresses, pantsuits, and long dresses.
